Sony tries to get down with the kids. Fails.

Thursday December 14th, 2006

E3 was bad enough, Sony stumbled through their shoddy presentation making various claims and sound bites for the Internet to devour and manipulate. But what you’re about to hear next goes beyond all expectations, I honestly couldn’t believe how ridiculous a company could get.

As we all know, the PSP isn’t fairing too well under Nintendo’s mighty grasp of the handheld world. Instead of say, releasing more games for it, pumping more money into it, Sony decided to go down the most ridiculous route you could imagine and do it wrong at the same time.

Basically, they paid a marketing company to set up a blog from the point of view of some kids who want a PSP for christmas. They hoped the cheesy videos and printable christmas cards would lead to it becoming viral. Well congratulations Sony, it worked, but the problem is, It’s gone viral for all the wrong reasons.

Firstly, they seem to of styled the typing of each ‘blog post’ in the most ridiculous manner, suggesting all gamers are illiterate. Rule number one of marketing, don’t offend your audience. Secondly, after the public got their hands on it, a mass commenting bombardment ensued in a negative light.

So what did they do? They banned the words “viral” and “marketing” from comments and went on a mass deleting rage to protect the integrity of Sony. Except it’s too late now, people know what’s going on and Sony has just become a laughing stock.

I’ll leave you with the finishing note of insanity, owners of the site left comments such as

“”we be just tryin to represent u guys… regular playas just tryin to get their gaem on, but now u gotta do all be dis then… u guys are noubs, pwnd!!” - ‘charlie’”

To try and keep the ‘illusion’ but I honestly can’t stop laughing at their pathetic efforts.

    This is just fucking freaky.

Wrote about the same thing on the same day and haven’t even spoke in god knows how long.

    Great minds and all that.

But still! Good to see hatred for Sony is unanimous. Hopefully this will lead to a swift ejection from the console market for them, or at least them reverting back to their PS1 tactics, otherwise known as ‘actually making good games’.

    Nice, didn’t notice that.

Yeah, my liking towards Sony has dropped exponentially over the past year or so. If they think that asking £450 for a console is okay, then they can think again.

They’ve done it completely wrong this time round. It’ll sell on launch day, no doubt about it, but in reality most of those sales will go straight onto eBay.
