Sony tries to get down with the kids. Fails.

Thursday December 14th, 2006

E3 was bad enough, Sony stumbled through their shoddy presentation making various claims and sound bites for the Internet to devour and manipulate. But what you’re about to hear next goes beyond all expectations, I honestly couldn’t believe how ridiculous a company could get.

As we all know, the PSP isn’t fairing too well under Nintendo’s mighty grasp of the handheld world. Instead of say, releasing more games for it, pumping more money into it, Sony decided to go down the most ridiculous route you could imagine and do it wrong at the same time.

Basically, they paid a marketing company to set up a blog from the point of view of some kids who want a PSP for christmas. They hoped the cheesy videos and printable (…)

Disclaimer: I’m unsure as to what the legality of this is, but to be fair, youtube hasn’t got the greatest reputation in the world.

Isn’t it annoying that the flash player on youtube doesn’t cache your videos? Or you view a video but can’t find it again the next day? Wouldn’t it be better if you could just download it? Well, you’re in luck, there’s a simple way to download videos straight your hard drive, so you can view it whenever you want.

So how do you do it? Well, some places recommend a Firefox plugin of sorts, but I use a site called KeepVid. All you need to do is simply paste the URL of the respective video into the textbox at the top (…)

Million Dollar Homepage guy pushes his luck.

Million Dollar Homepage

Everyone remembers (and envy’s) Alex Tew, a student from London famous for fabricating the ‘million dollar homepage‘, a novelty advertising website that sold space by the pixel. Well, he’s at it again, not content with the one million notes gleaned from his last venture, he’s in the process of creating a new website called pixelotto that sells each pixel at $2 a pop.

The twist this time round is that there’s going to be some sort of lottery where “the winner who clicks the right advertisement will win $1 million.”

I’m not convinced, it seems greed has got the better of him, obviously it’s natural for any ‘entrepreneur’, and I say that loosely, to want more money, (…)

An open letter to the designer of IE7

Wednesday November 29th, 2006

Dear Sir/Madam,

I’m writing to you today concerning my thoughts on the ‘revolutionary’ new design in the latest revision of Internet Explorer (7, if you forgot). After downloading the software, it was obvious to me that you must of been smoking a serious amount of crack at the time of development as it seems you haven’t got a clue about good browser design.

I’m no expert on HCI, but I do know that the user interface of most browsers over the years have been a pretty certain standard. You know why? Because it works. People are used to it, people like it. It’s simple and easy to use.

Until this amalgamation of woe came along.

I’m unsure as to what inspired to you place the most basic of controls (…)

HD Wars

hdwars

It’s well known nowadays that there’s a divide in the future of optical media. On one side of the ring, we have Blu-Ray and on the other sits HD-DVD. Both offer their various differences in terms of storage and hardware, but in reality, they’re designed to do the same thing. Hold content in High Definition format.

The concept of moving on in technology, as it always does, is great. But it seems to of split a divide in all of the convergent industries. The film industry, for example has studios backing one or the other. The games industry as another example, we all know Sony has packed in a Blu-Ray drive for their media format of choice, while Microsoft has opted in (…)

Blanket the UK with WiFi, A national campaign?

Thursday November 16th, 2006

The gadget show (Broadcast on Channel 5 in the UK) have just launched a ‘national campaign’ that entails encouraging the government to ‘blanket the entirety’ of the UK with free WiFi access.

Personally I think this is one of the best ideas I’ve heard all week, in this day and age anyway. Most gadgets nowadays involve some form of WiFi connectivity, from phones to PSP’s and obviously, laptops. In reality though, can we really use them wirelessly out in the open, being freely able to walk anywhere constantly connected? The simple answer is no.

As highlighted in the programme, coffee bars, hotels, fast food joints and even bars offer their own WiFi connection to use, but most of the time you have to pay before (…)

Minimalistic Firefox: A simple guide

Wednesday November 15th, 2006

Mozilla FirefoxEveryone loves Firefox, it’s the browser of browsers. I need not explain why, one would think the reasons for switching were obvious. However, the default interface for it is rather, lets say, bulky. I’m a minimalistic person; I like everything on my computer to be organised and simple. My desktop consists of three icons, my music is located in one folder. In fact, you could say my whole hard drive is like a carefully sorted filing cabinet. It’s not OCD, I hope, I just like it that way.

So, intrigued? In this article I’m going to explain how you can achieve a perfect, more streamlined looking browser, whilst retaining those vital features we’ve known to grow and love. To give a (…)
